Easter Diamondback Rattlesnake

Breeding:
Habits poorly know; 7-21 young, 12-14” long, are born July to early October.

Habitat:
Sand hill or longleaf pine and turnkey oak county, dry pine flatwoods, abandoned farmland; sea level to 500’.

Range:
Lower coastal plain, se. North Carolina to Florida Keys, west to s. Mississippi, and
extreme e. Louisiana.

Give it a wide berth; most dangerous snake in North America! Venom highly destructive to blood tissue. Stump holes, gopher tortoises’ burrows, and dens paths of saw palmetto often serve as retreats. Their numbers have been substantially reduced by extensive land development and by rattlesnake hunters. Eats rabbits, squirrels and birds.
